Hospital deaths linked to COVID-19 as per records held by the COVID Deaths Investigation Team (CDIT): December 2024
Background note
The figures do not include deaths at home addresses or care home residents where the resident died in hospital after contracting COVID-19 in a care home. The figures also do not include the death of any person who was in lawful custody but was transferred to hospital for treatment immediately prior to death and the deaths of workers even where they died in hospital.
Further enquiries by the police and other partner agencies can result in some deaths that were previously included in the figures being reviewed and removed where it is established that the death does not in fact meet the reporting criteria. Further enquiries can also result in additional deaths being included in the figures.
The figures reflect that CDIT has reviewed available information in relation to some of the reported deaths and decided that no further investigation is required. However, there is an obligation on COPFS to keep cases under review, including decisions in death investigations. Therefore, COPFS reserves the right to review and where appropriate, reopen cases at a future date.
