British Sign Language and the Scottish justice system

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is a member of the National Advisory Group working on the draft British Sign Language (BSL) National Plan 2017-2023. The Scottish Government’s consultation on the plan is now open.

COPFS will comply with the consultation’s recommendation to ensure that members of the BSL community have fair and equal access to the civil, criminal and juvenile justice systems in Scotland.

By 2023, the BSL National Plan will aim to assess how well the justice system serves BSL users and what improvements it needs. It will consider how new technologies can be used to enhance access to the justice systems.  Finally, it will ensure that the justice system has appropriate guidance and resources in place to facilitate and support the needs of BSL users.

We encourage as many people as possible to respond to this consultation to ensure that the Scottish justice system is able to offer the necessary support to BSL users in a timely and appropriate manner.

For more information see the Scottish Government Consultation website.  The consultation will run until Wednesday, 31 May 2017.
