Domestic abuse continues to be a significant issue in Scotland

COPFS figures published today show that domestic abuse continues to be a significant issue in Scotland.  Prosecutors dealt with over 34,000 charges reported by Police Scotland in the year 2015-16.

The effective and rigorous prosecution of domestic abuse responds to the unacceptable nature of offences which involve domestic abuse and to the impact which such offending can have on victims and on children.   Prosecutors are committed to holding to account perpetrators of crimes involving domestic abuse.

A Joint Protocol between COPFS and Police Scotland has been agreed in order to secure consistency of approach in the investigation, reporting and prosecution of these cases. In consultation with key stakeholders that Protocol is currently being updated to ensure it reflects current best practice and continues to provide a useful source of guidance to investigators and prosecutors.
