Pursuing criminals on a global scale

Scotland’s reach in pursuing criminals is on a truly global scale and its prosecution service is well-placed to identify, apprehend and prosecute all those who seek to profit from crime.

Today two men were sentenced to a joint total of 42 years for their role in the smuggling of more than three tonnes of cocaine aboard the ocean-going tug, the MV Hamal. The ship was boarded by officers from the National Crime Agency and Border Force on 23 April 2015 off the Aberdeenshire coast, on its way from Guyana to a planned rendezvous to the west of Denmark.

The investigation into the seizure, overseen by Crown Office officials, resulted in a three-month trial at Glasgow High Court.
